Bombardier To Design Tramways For The City Of Marseille

Bombardier Transportation is developing a new bidirectional Bombardier* FLEXITY* Outlook tram for the new tramway network of Marseille, which is due to open in 2006-2007. The initial contract awarded by the Communauté Urbaine Marseille Provence Métropole (MPM) calls for the engineering work and the conception of the industrial design as well as the production of a 1:1 mock-up of the vehicle. The next step, which is expected to take place during the fall of 2004, will entail the order of 25 to 30 serial vehicles by MPM to cover the needs of the first phase of the project.

“Bombardier is proud of this new order, as it once again bears witness to the trust that a city such as Marseille has invested in our company,” says André Navarri, President, Bombardier Transportation. “The technology and design of these new vehicles significantly raise the standards in terms of comfort, efficiency and performance for the benefit of the operator and the passengers.”

The FLEXITY tram for Marseille is based on a proven technology that features a 100 % low floor interior while keeping conventional wheel-set bogies which confer excellent dynamic characteristics (comfort and safety). The vehicle also includes the proven Bombardier* MITRAC* propulsion and control system. The architecture of the FLEXITY vehicle is particularly well adapted to the exclusive and innovative design that has been chosen by the Communauté Urbaine Marseille Provence Métropole which naturally fits with the maritime background of the city. Wide windows offer a panoramic view and create a feeling of transparency. The natural wooden seats and blue interior colour scheme accentuate the Mediterranean influence even more.

Vehicles of the same family are in successful revenue service in the cities of Linz (Austria) and Lodz (Poland) and have recently been ordered by the cities of Eskisehir (Turkey), Geneva (Switzerland) and Brussels (Belgium).

Bombardier Transportation in France operates primarily at its Crespin site in the Valenciennes region, where it employs more than 2400 people. In the French market, Bombardier Transportation participates in all TGV programs and manufactures a wide range of rolling stock for public transport. Among these products are the MF 2000 vehicles for the Paris metro, the Strasbourg, Nantes and Saint-Etienne tramways, the recent vehicles for the RER network and the TER2N NG regional transport railcars. Recently, Bombardier Transportation signed a contract with SNCF for the supply of 500 TER (Regional Express Trains) of the Autorail Grande Capacité (AGC) type for the French regions.
