Bombardier Transportation receives another firm order for 15 additional TALENT 2 trains from Deutsche Bahn in Germany

New trains start operation end of 2010 as Rhine-Sieg-Express on the Aachen-Cologne-Siegen route

Deutsche Bahn AG has placed an order for another 15 BOMBARDIER TALENT 2 trains valued at approximately 60 million euros ($85 million US). The trains are to be deployed on the Aachen-Cologne-Siegen route as the regional Rhine-Sieg-Express (RSX) in Germany.

The total number of TALENT 2 trains ordered by the Deutsche Bahn AG comes to 76 following previous orders of 61 electrical multiple units (EMU) for the Koblenz-Trier/Perl (Moselbahn) route, the Cottbus-Leipzig route and for the Nuremberg commuter rail network.

The firm orders are part of a framework agreement signed between Deutsche Bahn AG and Bombardier Transportation in February 2007. This agreement encompassed potential delivery of up to 321 trains.

The recently developed TALENT 2 electrical multiple unit platform (the 442 series) is characterized by its modular concept and its high degree of standardisation. This provides a great deal of flexibility in terms of configuration, along with cost-effectiveness and cost transparency. The innovative, modular construction principle results in up to 250 variants of the same train type being possible, i.e. the two- to six-car trains can be fitted with numerous different modules, depending on whether they are to be used as commuter, regional or inter-regional trains.

The RSX fleet proves the flexibility of the vehicle concept in concrete terms. For example, one intermediate car of this configuration will be fitted with two doors, whereas the other intermediate cars will have only one exit/entry per side.

Stephan Krenz, Managing Director and President of Bombardier Transportation’s Germany and Scandinavia business division, commented: “The TALENT 2 train offers modern travel with reliability, comfort, safety and short journey times. We are pleased that Deutsche Bahn customers in North Rhine-Westphalia will also be able to use this next generation of an environmentally-friendly and attractive train. The TALENT 2 train is the ideal vehicle in which to enjoy the new picturesque route. Significantly for Bombardier the Rhine-Sieg Express route also connects Aachen and Siegen – both Bombardier sites.”

For passengers who have impaired mobility, sight or hearing, tactile lettering on all controls along with audible and visual passenger information throughout the train make the journey more enjoyable. In addition the Rhine-Sieg Express vehicles will be designed with an entry platform height of 800 mm. Boarding at stations with lower platforms will be made easier for passengers by means of an additional sliding step.

In all train configurations a special entry for wheelchair users leads into the wide multi-purpose area in which toilets are designed to accommodate people with special needs. A specially designed second entry next to this multi-purpose compartment allows passengers with bicycles, strollers and luggage, for example, to board at the same time.

Overall the train's modern interior and exterior design as well as the space it offers to move about freely creates greater transparency and helps passengers feel safer.

A scalable traction output provided by the highly reliable BOMBARDIER MITRAC propulsion and control system makes the train particularly energy-efficient. The vehicle can be specifically adapted for the frequent acceleration and braking phases common in commuter rail operation as well as for the needs of the regional rail network where it can reach a top speed of 160 km/h.
